Am I eligible for an ABLE account?

You are eligible to open a Washington State ABLE account if you are a resident of Washington State and meet one of the following:

  • A disability must be present before age 26, and you must be entitled to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) because of your disability, OR

  • A disability must be present before age 26 AND at least one of the following requirements must be met:

    • You have a written diagnosis from a licensed physician documenting a medically determinable physical or mental impairment which results in marked and severe functional limitations, that can be expected to last for at least a year or can cause death, OR

    • You are classified as blind (as defined in the Social Security Act), OR

    • You have a disability that is included on the Social Security Administration’s List of Compassionate Allowances Conditions

If you are eligible to open a Washington State ABLE account, you may be referred to as the eligible individual or the beneficiary.  It is important to note that if your situation changes in any way causing you to no longer be eligible for a Washington State ABLE account, it is your, the person managing your account’s, or your Authorized Legal Representative’s obligation to notify us.
